Group Mapping Project for 8000BCE-600CE
By this time you will have completed your own personal unit map and for your group map you are going to expand beyond the requirements of the unit map to present a major theme of this period of time. As civilizations emerged, with them came the spread of ideas, materials and beliefs.
The requirements of the group map are:
· Accurately label the required cities on the map (you must use a minimum of 25 cities from the previously provided list for the personal map – if you utilize more, this could add to your
· Accurately label/shade a minimum of 10 empires on the map (preferably the ones that would directly relate to your team’s map theme)
· Depict the theme of your map (the spread of faith systems/the spread of materials and technology) clearly so that even someone not in this course could understand what your map is trying to convey.
· Creatively interpret the theme and display it in a neat and visually attractive map (poster size)
The themes to be represented:
A. The spread of faith systems: During this period we observed the emergence of Monotheistic faiths of Zoroastrianism, Judaism & Christianity. It is also during this period that there is the codification of Hinduism & the birth of Buddhism. These faith systems spread beyond their founders or origins and took hold of either a singular culture or spread to multiple regions. Your map will indicate the origins and potential spread of the following faith systems:
B. The spread of materials and technology relates to the emergence and mastery of various forms of trade. With the spread of trade goods, it is evident that not only goods were traded but also customs, ideas and other forms of cultural diffusion. Your group map should reflect the major trade routes which connected the early civilizations of the world, as well as what items were traded and where these items originated. Other components of trade should also be noted. Your map should include:
a. Major trade routes (silk road, Phoenician Sea trade routes…etc)
b. Trade routes should be demonstrated for each inhabited continent
c. Indication of goods produced from various regions
d. Notation of trade behaviors (barter versus the use of some form of currency)
e. The spread of technological knowledge or tools
Your group’s map is a larger poster version of the personal map & will be due October 22nd in class. Each member of the group should contribute to the overall appearance and accuracy of the map.
